I've got to admit that books is a weakness of mine. I finally made the switch and seldom purchase physical books much any more but I've still got enough around that I need to work my way through. Books have a special place in my heart so that's my struggle.

I'm so sorry to hear about the experience - and it is sad to think about what must be behind such extreme hoarding. I guess unless you're a compete minimalist the fight against cutter is always there. But as long as we're fighting it then it won't completely take over.

I have had experience with hoarders - situations way beyond clutter - in both my family and my spouses'. There was one very sad situation which I won't even discuss online, and I am convinced it led to an early (72 years old) death of a certain relative. Just thinking of what his house looked like terrifies me - and yet, guess what, I fight my own clutter, too.

I go back and forth between clutter and clean. I live with messy people and pack rats, and I used to fight daily with them about cleanliness. But I have control over my personal areas, and I take control over the kitchen and the front room. So I try to keep those clutter free. I do have a lot of books and papers everywhere as a teacher, blogger, avid reader, and writer. I could do a better job of organizing my work piles into baskets or something. Thanks for all the information. It was thought provoking and practical.

Oh me! That That must have been an interesting visit and disconcerting. It makes me curious if the area has always looked like this or if something has changed in her life recently to have caused it to start.

I spend Christmas at a friend's house. Her bedroom, bed, closet and bathroom was beyond cluttered. It looked like hoarders lived there. While she makes more of an attempt to keep the rest of her home in shape, I'm wondering if "a bomb went off in her bed/bath room" look is more of an indication of her relationship with her husband? Truly a shocking mess! I can't begin to comprehend it. There's not even room for them to sleep in their bed.
