Ingredients

for the crust:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar
  • 1/3 cup water
  • vegetable shortening enough to grease a 14-inch diameter pizza pan

for the filling:

  • 4 medium to large apples peeled and sliced
  • 3 Tablespoons sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees

  2. In a mixing bowl, mix the flour, and sugar.

  3. With a pastry knife, cut the vegetable shortening into the flour until well combined.

  4. Add the water a little at a time while mixing with a spatula to form a dough.

  5. Grease a pizza pan with vegetable shortening and dust the surface with flour. Roll the dough into a 14 inch diameter circle.

  6. Peel and slice your apples and arrange them on the center of the dough while leaving 2 inches around the edge to turn up.

  7. Combine the sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

  8. Sprinkle the surface of the apples with the lemon juice and then sprinkle the sugar-spice mixture.

  9. Fold the edges of the crust up around the apple filling and transfer the galette to a 400 F pre-heated oven.

  10. Bake the galette for about 1 hour or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown.

  11. Let the galette cool on the pan on a wire rack until it is warm enough to touch without burning your fingers.

  12. Slice and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
