Why pizza rolls instead of just regular pizza?
Recently, I was invited to an event to which everyone was told “bring finger foods.” Now I’m not really great with “finger foods” and usually I would have just defaulted to crackers, chips, or something found in the freezer section at the grocery store.
But I hated to be a totally lazy guest. Fortunately, I’ve got a secret weapon – a hubby who is a marvelous (and creative) cook.
After a bit of debating, we decided that something with a little substance to it would be nice since these snacks were going to be dinner. Pizza is the ultimate finger food at our house. So what if it takes all of your fingers – it still counts! So we decided to make our own homemade pizza and roll it into slices that would legitimately qualify as finger food.
Isn’t homemade pizza dough hard to make?
Now I’m going to admit right here that when it comes to pizza – or anything that requires dough – Jungle Jim is the expert. I sometimes tease that as soon as I found a man who could make bread I jumped at the chance to marry him! I tell him I just can’t quite get the hang of how to make the dough but the truth is that he’s so good at it, I prefer to let him do it. Shh! Don’t anyone tell, okay?

He’s been making pizza for us for so long that he can do this in his sleep!

He says a mistake that most people make with homemade pizza is that they use too much sauce. To keep it from turning out soggy you have to be use the Goldilocks method and get it “just right” – you don’t want to drown the dough.

Once you’ve rolled into a single roll, cut the slices and put on greased cookie sheet. It’s so nice to have a hubby who cooks!

How to make homemade pizza rolls
Homemade Pizza Rolls
Ingredients
Dough
- 2 cups flour
- 3 Tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 pkg yeast
- 1 to 1 1/4 cups water
Sauce
- 1 8-ounce can tomato sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon balsalmic vinegar
Topping
- onion flakes
- Parmesean cheese
Garlic Butter
- 1/2 stick butter or margarine melted
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
-
Stir dough ingredients together till gooey. Cover with a towel and let sit till it doubles in size.
-
For pizza rolls, dough will still be a little too wet. Add a little flour to the dough and knead on a floured surface. You want to be able to touch the dough without your hands sticking to it.
-
Mix sauce ingredients together.
-
Roll dough out into a thin crust. Sprinkle with onion flakes and roll gently into the dough.
-
Spoon sauce on to the dough and spread around until there is a very thin coating.
-
Sprinkle liberally with Parmesan cheese.
-
Starting at one end, carefully lift the edge of one side and fold over. You’re rolling this into one single long roll.
-
Spray a cookie sheet with PAM or other non-stick cooking spray.
-
Slice roll into 1-inch pieces and place on sheet. Makes about 28 slices.
-
Set cookie sheet aside and let pizza roll slices rise again till nearly doubled in size.
-
Bake in 425 degree oven for approximately 15 minutes. Check for doneness as cooking time will depend on how thick the slices are.
-
Mix ingredients for garlic butter together and brush on top of cooked pieces.
The pizza rolls were perfect for taking to my gathering. I just put them on a paper plate and slid the plate into a gallon Ziploc bag. No mess or fuss.
You could easily add some cooked sausage or diced pepperoni to this recipe – just sprinkle a little on before you start rolling the dough.
For that matter, any of your favorite diced pizza ingredients would work. I happen to like green and black olives and onions. We just chose not to add those since we weren’t sure of about the tastes of the other guests.
The nice thing about this recipe is that you can make it to your family’s specifications once you’ve got the dough and basic sauce prepared.
Baking Accessories handy to have on hand for making homemade pizza rolls

1 – Every kitchen needs a set of measuring cups for liquids. I like these because they come in a set and because you can easily see the measurements without having to crouch down and look at the cup from eye level.
2 – Even though we’re using rolling pins that were passed down from our grandmothers, this nonstick rolling pin is what I’d encourage my daughter to put in her kitchen.
3 – A rolling pizza cutter is an essential in any serious pizza lover’s kitchen.
4 – A good cookie sheet or two is essential because the open sides make it easier to remove baked goods than if you used a baking pan with sides (a jelly roll pan).

One more thing before you leave…if you hate meal planning but like good food, I know of a solution. It’s called the $5 Meal Plan (because it really is only $5 a month).
It’s from the same people who bring you the Grocery Budget Makeover (which I’ve taken and love). This is a monthly subscription that lets you set the parameters and a meal plan and shopping list is created for you.
The hardest thing you have to do is log into the site to download your plan – that’s it. I just joined and absolutely LOVED the meal plan builder function. It allowed me to further customize the weekly recipes for things I know the folks at my house will eat. I think I’m in love!
